Want to feel like a Unicorn every single day?

I’m not sure I’ve figured out exactly how to live like a unicorn, but when I practice these magical daily rituals, I feel pretty dang close.

If you want to be a unicorn too, try adding some of my favorite tips to your day!

(Full disclaimer: Results may vary. Magical unicorn powers sold separately. These tips are just a guide - feel free to get inventive and create your own)!

When I wake up before the sun, I feel like I’m part of some magical cosmic secret. Everything is quiet and sacred.

I LOVE my sleep, so admittedly waking up early doesn’t happen as often as I’d like it to. But on the days I do wake up before the sun, I always have a better day. Always. Every time.

I do my yoga, listen to the first morning birds, and meditate. P.S. Nothing in the world is more glorious than closing your eyes to meditate in darkness and opening them to the rising sun.

It’s so magical it will take your breath away! 5/5 stars!

Try this for yourself:

  • Get an alarm app like Sleep Cycle. It gently prompts you to get up when you’re most awake, so you don’t have that awful groggy feeling when your alarm goes off.

  • Go to bed early the night before so you get plenty of sleep.

  • Resist the urge to snooze. Put your feet on the floor, stand up, and gently stretch out your body.

  • Drink water as soon as you sit up. This wakes you up fast!

Rather than force my body to follow a “plan” I listen to what my body needs and love it accordingly.

If it needs gentle movement, I do yoga. If it needs to move with purpose, I do aerobics or run.

If it needs extra strength, I do weights. If it needs stillness, I rest up and don’t feel guilty about it!

It’s the same with food. Sometimes my body needs grounding, heaviness, and comfort, so I load up on carbs and hearty, rich food.

Other days, my body needs lightness and vitality, so I eat light, fresh foods like salads, fruit, and veggies. Sometimes, my body needs healing, so I focus on nutritious proteins and fats.

Sometimes my body needs sunshine, nature, and socializing. Other times it needs darkness, quiet, and the comforts of home.

Within the limits of my schedule, I aim to give my body exactly what it needs that day.

It’s amazing how much better life feels, and how positively your body responds when you listen to what it needs.

Try this for yourself:

  • When you’ve gotten out of bed, find a quiet place to sit and close your eyes.

  • Breathe deeply for a few moments, so you can connect with your body and mind.

  • Ask these questions:

  1. How do I need to eat to nourish myself today?

  2. How do I need to move to feel energized and nurtured?

  3. How do I need to love myself today?

If you feel like you just need something but you’re not quite sure what it is: it’s water. In fact, did you know that by the time you feel thirsty, you’re already dehydrated!

Thirst is one of the first signs of dehydration.

I have a big Mickey Mouse water bottle that I fill up 2-3 times per day. Just because I like to feel extra glamorous, I pour my water from there into a champagne glass.

Sometimes I even add a few frozen berries, or lemon, lime, or cucumber slices to the bottom of the glass. Now, if that’s not living like a unicorn, I don’t know what is.

According to Healthline, the average person needs about 2 L of water every day. However, you might need more if you exercise, live in a warm area, use air conditioning/heating, or are unwell.

Try this for yourself:

  • Get yourself a cute water bottle you’ll love drinking from. I bought an inexpensive rose gold water bottle and DIY’d a Mickey Mouse ear design with contact paper. It looks so cute and I love using it. #disneyadult

  • Take it up a notch by pouring from said water bottle into a fun glass. I love to drink out of a champagne glass.

  • Jazz up your water and make it taste lovely with fresh fruit slices, cucumber, or sprigs of mint.

  • Get a water filter like this one. It makes even the foulest tasting tap water taste like bottled spring water.

  • I hate syrupy, acidy, chemical-tasting tap water. It tastes so disgusting, I just can’t. I never got used to it again after living in the country and having access to fresh, clear rainwater from our tank. Now I’ll only drink tap water that has been through a water filter. Even if I go out, I have to take my water bottle with me because I don’t do straight tap water. #princesslife.

Exercise just makes me happier. I’ve noticed that on the days I move my body I’m happier, more productive, more focused, and more relaxed. I even sleep better.

Science backs this up. The University of Vermont found that 20 minutes of exercise can boost your mood for up to 12 hours.

Exercise boosts endorphins (feel-good chemicals) and lowers stress by reducing cortisol and adrenaline. Yay!

It doesn’t matter what you do. Pick an activity you love, or just dance around in your knickers to your favorite songs. You’ll feel amazing afterward!

Try this for yourself:

  • Make a list of sports you played for fun as a kid, like tennis, basketball, swimming, horse riding, or soccer. Many local councils run subsidized, low-cost community adult sports programs you can join. You have the bonus of making new friends!

  • Brainstorm activities you always wanted to try, like burlesque dancing, tae kwon do, or parkour. Get researching classes in your area. It’s a worthwhile investment in your health and happiness.

  • Jot down movement that makes you happy: Pilates, yoga, weight lifting, aerobics, dancing - whatever! Search for free virtual videos on YouTube. You can get active without even having to leave your house!

  • Incorporate incidental movement into your day. Take your runners with you to work, and go for a leisurely walk in the sunshine at lunchtime. You could also park further away from work, or get off the bus a stop earlier, and walk into your office. Opt for stairs rather than the elevator, and go for a walk to talk to your colleagues rather than send an email.

  • Put on a playlist of your favorite feel-good songs and bop it out for 20 minutes. Discover moves you didn’t even know you had!

Nothing gives you a unicorn glow like well-maintained skin. Tending to my skin feels so luxurious and soothing. I can’t believe I spent so much of my life skipping skincare!

Now I can’t begin my day until I’ve done my morning skincare. And no matter how tired I am, or how late I get in, at the very least I remove my makeup, wash my face and moisturize before bed.

Try this for yourself:

  • You don’t have to do some convoluted 9 step Korean regime to reap the benefits of skincare (unless you want to, of course).

  • Start how I started: with a basic 3 step foundation you can build on, depending on how much time you have. You can gradually build on this later once you’ve made the basics a non-negotiable habit.

  • Chat with a dermatologist or aesthetician to start with products that are right for you. At the very least, get a good cleanser for your skin type, a gentle toner, and a hydrating moisturizer. My personal favorites are Natio Gentle Foaming Cleanser, a gentle alcohol-free toner, and Natio Ageless Daily Moisturiser for daytime or Neutrogena Rapid Wrinkle Repair Regenerating Night Cream for the evening.

And I’m not talking about skin, here (although I do that too). I prime my mindset for gratitude, focus, energy, and productivity in the morning.

It’s a 10 minute guided meditation led by Tony Robbins himself and it’s completely free on YouTube. Tony takes you through breathing exercises, visualization, and gratitude, to get you excited and ready to crush your goals.

I finish each priming meditation ready to conquer the world and feeling like the unicorniest unicorn to ever unicorn.

Try this for yourself:

  • Set aside 10 minutes for the morning where you can be distraction-free. If you have to get up before your kids/spouse/roommates to do this, it’s worth it. It only takes 10 minutes.

  • Close the door, and sit tall in a comfortable chair with your feet planted firmly on the ground.

  • Pop on this priming meditation and follow the instructions. That’s it!

I love to bask in the sunshine and feel its light and warmth permeate my skin, nourishing my body and soul.

Especially since I work indoors, I try to spend time in the sun each day, reaping its benefits for my body and mind. You don’t need long - even 10 minutes of sun exposure has incredible benefits.

Because of the dangers of overexposure, a lot of us avoid the sun altogether, but this does us a disservice. With a few protective measures, there’s no reason you can’t enjoy the sun safely.

In fact, it's incredibly good for you! Sunlight is proven to regulate sleep, boost your immune system, and improve your mood.

If you’re feeling a little blah, get out in the sun and breathe the fresh air for 10 minutes. I promise you’ll come back indoors feeling like a new woman.

Try this for yourself:

  • Visit The Benefits of Safe Sun to learn how to enjoy the sun without harmful damage.

  • Make sure you are getting outside for at least 10 minutes a day in winter.

  • In summer, for most people, incidental sunshine is enough (walking from your car to the office, going out to check the letterbox). For any longer than this, make sure you're slathered in SPF and wearing a big hat.

  • Visit the beach, have a picnic in the park, potter around your garden, or read a book in the backyard.

I take a shower if I’m busy or overtired and just need to get bathing over and done with: but I prefer a long, luxurious bubble bath. It makes me feel like a star!

I may even make some spa water or hot tea, slather on a face mask, light some candles, put on a movie and chill out in there.

It relaxes my muscles, detoxes and cleanses my skin, and helps me wind down for sleep like nothing else. Try this for yourself:

  • Having a bath is kind of a prerequisite but if you don’t have one, no worries. You can still set the mood with candlelight, essential oils, and relaxation music.

  • Make sure your bath is clean. Before jumping in, give the bath a thorough wipe down and the hell with it, give your whole bathroom a good spruce. It’s more relaxing that way.

  • Run both hot water and cold to fill your bath. You don’t want it too hot or too cold. If it’s too cool, you’ll be shivering cold in minutes. If it’s too hot, you’ll be sweaty, sick, and gross. Trust me. You'll literally puke, don't do it. The ideal temperature is about 40 degrees, just a little warmer than body temperature.

  • Add some muscle soak to help relax your muscles.

  • Pop in some bath salts for extra detoxing and deliciousness. I like to drop these salt rocks into each bath. My skin always feels heavenly afterward and it’s so relaxing!

  • Add a few drops of your favorite essential oils. Give the bath a good stirabout to disperse the oils.

  • Add your bubble bath. The benefits of being a grown-up is that nobody can tell you how much bubble bath is too much.

  • Hell, add a bath bomb too. This is the most extra bath of all time.

  • Make sure you have all the beauty products you need around the bath so you don’t have to keep getting in and out. A bath caddy always comes in handy.

  • Light some candles (carefully). Put on some music (or a Disney movie).

  • Double-check the temperature of the water with your wrist before getting in.

  • Jump in the bath and peace out.

I recently made my own signature scent body spray with essential oils.

I call it The Happiest Fragrance on Earth, because the fragrance is Disney inspired. I love it.

I also make a matching fragrance oil that I put on my arms and legs each morning. It’s heavenly!

Try this for yourself:

  • Do a lot of experimentation to find your signature scent. Smell samples at perfume counters. You’ll notice you’re drawn to certain combinations.

  • Think about scents you already love - like fresh baked cookies, tropical getaways, the forest after a storm, or gardens in springtime. This will determine whether you’re better suited to a floral, woody, or creamy scent.

  • Shop your current/past perfume choices. What perfumes have you worn in the past that you were always complimented on?

  • Have a go at making your own with an essential oil blend. It’s surprisingly easy.

Your girl is very savvy when it comes to beauty! I do most of my personal care and beauty care myself: from facials to nails to hair removal to tanning.

I know what I like, I’m particular, and it saves a lot of money. Plus there’s something so glamorous, ladylike, and relaxing about DIY beauty treatments.

It may take a bit more time, but the result is always worth it, and I feel magical afterward.

Try this for yourself:

  • Raid your kitchen: Your kitchen likely has all you need for amazing beauty DIYs. Coffee, sugar, and coconut oil make a divine body scrub, whilst whisked egg white is a great firming face mask.

  • Whip up this DIY face mask for glowy, bright skin.

  • Make your existing beauty products work overtime: This $5 jar of emu cream has myriad uses. I also use my argan oil for just about everything, from hair treatment to cracked heels.

  • Research beauty DIYs on YouTube. There are instruction videos on how to DIY everything from manicures to blow drys.

I simply cannot feel my best without a solid seven hours of high-quality sleep. Getting ready for bed has become a ritual.

I spray my sheets with lavender spray, turn on my humidifier, snuggle under my weighted blanket, and chill out with a Disney movie. Setting up these little cues tells my body it’s time for sleep, and I’m usually asleep in no time.

A rested unicorn is a magical unicorn!

Try this for yourself:

  • Use an alarm app like Sleep Cycle (I swear I’m not a sponsor or affiliate, I just really love this alarm). It will track your sleep quality and help you understand your sleep patterns.

  • Follow these tips for getting the best night’s sleep ever.

  • Try to wake up at the same time every morning, weekday or weekend.

  • Similarly, try to go to bed around the same time each night. Your body will get into a good routine and will know when to wind down for sleep.

  • Start to dim the lights after dinner. It signals to your body to start producing the sleep chemical melatonin. Harsh LED lighting tricks your body into thinking it’s daytime, disrupting sleep.

  • Spray down your sheets with lavender spray. Lavender is a popular aromatherapy scent for promoting deep relaxation and sleep.

  • Snuggle under a weighted blanket. I have a big 15 kg one that I throw on my bed. The extra weight on my body makes me feel cozy, relaxed, and sleepy in seconds. I overheat during the night, so I throw it off before I’m fully asleep.

  • Have a little order, or ritual, to your pre-bed activities. Your brain recognises it as a “sleep sequence”, making it easier to drift off to slumber town.

My little pink tiger notebook never leaves my side. I make gratitude lists, to-do lists, shopping lists, write memos, reminders, dreams, goals, new learnings, brainstorms, content editorials - just everything I have to get out of my brain and into the physical realm.

It’s an odd little hodgepodge book of everything, but it keeps me organized and on top of my game.

I used to have separate journals for all these things, but now I just keep this one. Everything feels more contained.

It’s well leafed, and admittedly a mess, but that’s the way I like it.

For daily scheduling, I keep a simple daily planner. Life’s just easier that way.

Try this for yourself:

  • Get yourself a cute notebook or Filofax in your favorite color. Make it something compact that you can carry easily with you, but big enough to fit lots of things in. I also like mine to open flat, so I can have it sitting open at my desk ready to go.

  • Get a pen that glides across the page, to make writing a dream.

  • Jot down everything - to-dos, notes, recipes, dreams, gratitude, affirmations.

  • Make sure to carry any important dates across into a diary or online scheduler.

I can’t relax in a messy space. I always feel my best when my living space is clean, organized, and smells like a perfumed garden.

I like to create a peaceful environment by making my home a sanctuary. It subtly stresses me out when I look around and see chaos, and this stress compounds with time.

When my house looks and smells clean, I honestly feel like a million bucks.

Try this for yourself:

  • Make your bed every morning. It instantly transforms your bedroom into a cozy, inviting sleep haven.

  • Do your dishes. It’s my least favorite chore, but it’s the one that makes the most difference in how clean my house looks and feels.

  • Do a quick speed clean. I wash any dirty dishes, then working through the below activities, depending on time.

  • Set a timer for 10 minutes and tidy up your main living areas as much as you can in that time. Throw on an oil diffuser, light candles, wipe down your counters, and spray fabric refresher. It doesn’t take long for your home to feel clean and uplifting.

  • Got another 5 minutes? Wipe down your bathroom counters and surfaces, and give your toilet a quick clean.

  • Got another 5 minutes? Give the bedroom/s a quick tidy. Don’t worry about getting it perfect, just do what you can to put away any clothes, and/or wipe down dusty surfaces. It's amazing what you can get done.

  • Got another 10 minutes? Go, you! Give your floors a quick vacuum, and spot mop.

  • Got another 5 minutes? Throw a load of washing in the machine, and spend the remaining time folding clean laundry.

  • In under an hour, your home will look and feel inviting and refreshed. Ahh!

My recipe for a productive, vibey day: open the blinds, light scented candles, and turn on a jazz playlist. I love having music in the background, like setting a little soundtrack for my day.

Try this for yourself:

  • Working/studying from home? Light candles with an uplifting scent and pop on a playlist that keeps you energized. I love a good bossa nova mix, but to each their own.

  • Working in the office? Listen to music through headphones, if your workplace allows. Otherwise, there are plenty of ways to “vibe up” your desk: keep a little houseplant, photos of your loved ones, or super cute stationery you love using.

Surrounding yourself with things you love makes you happy and inspired. They’re little magic charms: you only have to look at them to feel happy, no matter what.

I keep my office full of the things I love: Disney ornaments, the color pink, and my favorite books. It inspires me and fills me with gratitude and joy every time I look up from my screen.

Try this for yourself:

  • Keep photos of your loved ones, friends, and happiest moments all around you.

  • Keep mementos from your travels, collectible figurines, or your favorite books on display.

  • Make your favorite color the central focus of your decor color scheme. A cute way to do this is with a basic black and white palette with pops of your favorite color throughout.

  • Don’t keep sentimental items stashed away in bubble wrap: put them on display so you can enjoy them.

  • Use the good china: Don’t save your “special” things for a special occasion. Life IS a special occasion. You’ll get a lot more enjoyment and value out of sentimental items when you use them and make new memories.

Oil is my favorite beauty hack. I cover myself in it religiously.

I oil my body with scented oil in the morning and coconut oil in the evening. I massage my face with argan oil in the morning, and use an oil-based serum in the evening.

I add argan oil to the ends of my hair every other day to keep it silky smooth and protected. I also do a warm coconut oil hair treatment every week. If I’m home for the day, I’m most likely a walking oil slick. It makes an amazing difference to the health and quality of your skin and hair.

I love having glowy, radiant unicorn skin and I truly believe oil is the secret. It adds all-day dewiness to your makeup, smooths your skin, and just feels extra luxurious.

Try this for yourself:

  • Slather your body in coconut oil or olive oil every evening.

  • Give your face a massage with a lightweight oil, like jojoba oil or argan oil, every morning. It depuffs your face and gives it a youthful, dewy glow.

  • Oil before or after moisturizer? If you have oily skin, best to use it before moisturizer. If you have dry skin, use it after moisturizing to lock in the hydration.

  • Protect your hair with argan oil! Massage the tiniest amount of argan oil into your hair mid-lengths to ends (seriously, you don’t need much). Avoid the roots unless you want to rock a super oily slick look. Argan oil protects against damage from heat products and nourishes your ends.

  • Do a warm coconut oil treatment on your hair once a week. Microwave oil in a microwave-safe container for a few seconds (and carefully test it’s not too hot). Then apply to your mid-lengths to ends and brush it through for even distribution. Let it sit for a few hours, or ideally overnight/all day before washing it out. You may need a couple of shampoos to completely remove the oil.

And thus concludes my tips for glowing like a unicorn every single day! Of course, I don’t always have time to do all the above every day, but even when I do just one thing, I feel like a super sparkly and magical unicorn!

Give them a try for yourself and let me know how you feel! I’d love to hear how they worked for you!

And more importantly, I’d love to hear your own tips. What are your little daily rituals for feeling like a sparkly, magical Unicorn of life?
